Tasty Slax

I have a confession to make. I run Linux under one of my USB sticks. I bought a 1 GB USB stick and I installed Linux live version. It’s Slax, which is based on Slackware. It runs faster than my openSuSE 10.3 and Windoze XP. At first, after I booted it up, I couldn’t surf the internet, but later this evening, I tried to find the solution on Google. And, I found it. I can surf the web now.

Surprisingly, it plays mp3, as well as avi. I still don’t know if I can play DVD, but I will give it a try. It can see my openSuSE partition (Of course) and I can access the files. I just need to do a lot of tweaking; then, I can make it run the way I want it.

I’m still wondering if I can add a user, because, so far, I’ve been running it as root. It’s not that I’m worried I’m going to do something stupid, but I just don’t feel like running Linux as root.

Here’s what I did to my USB stick, based on the information from Pendrivelinux. First, I downloaded the Slax ISO. Then, using 7-Zip, I extracted the files from the SLAX ISO to my USB stick. After that, I downloaded the fixs.zip and extracted the files to my USB stick.

Next, using command prompt (start-> run-> cmd), I ran the fixs.bat file from the USB stick and followed the on screen instructions. Then, I downloaded syslinux-3.51.zip and unzipped the files to my USB stick (Before unzipping the files, create a directory called “syslinux” on the USB stick; then, zip the files). After that, with command prompt, I typed cd J:\syslinux\win32. Then, I typed syslinux.exe -ma J: (replace J with your USB drive letter) to make the drive bootable.

Later on, I rebooted my computer and set my system BIOS to boot from USB-ZIP or USB-HDD. Last but not least, I saved my BIOS settings. On the next reboot, I successfully launched USB SLAX Linux compilation. Don’t be disappointed, the internet may not work. The solution to the problem is, open konsole; then, type:
modprobe e100
ifconfig eth0 up
dhcpcd eth0

It’s easy, right? So, if you want to run Linux without installing it on your hard drive, try what I did. If you’re satisfied, you can install it there too. Life is simple! Now, I’m working on running Windoze XP under Linux. Wouldn’t that be a sensation!
